Planning and Vision:

Blue Zones: In 2012, at the invitation of and sponsorship by the Farmington MPO, Blue Zones visited Farmington, Aztec, and Bloomfield with a two-day workshop in Farmington and conducted a walking audit of our downtown area.  Since then we worked with Dan Burden and Samantha Thomas of Blue Zones to research and engage the community in the future of our Main Street.  As a result, a vision and implementation plan was developed for Downtown Farmington: A MainStreet project.  Now it’s time to take it to the next level: construction ready documents.


On March 28, 2017, the City of Farmington, through an RFQP, entered into an agreement with Occam Engineers Inc.  OEI is the company who will develop construction ready documents for two blocks of Main Street (Miller to Orchard) and complete the environmental, geotechnical investigation, utility data collection, and traffic assessments for the entire corridor.  

On May 9, 2017 City staff participated in a kick-off meeting with the OEI team.  That meeting provided great insight into the timeline for deliverables. In the weeks to come, a kick-off meeting will be schedule with business owners and residents and information about the process, timeline, and end product will be discussed.

On October 17, 2017 a public meeting was held at the new HQ.  OEI presented the schematic design renderings with options for parking styles.  

In November 2017 through a series of meetings, the public, the MRA Commission, and the City Council approved the 22.5° angled parking scenario. However, the engineering of this design within our 80-foot right-of-way created modifications which reduced the width of our proposed sidewalks to 12-feet on average and reduced the width of the park assist lane.  We felt that 12-foot wide sidewalks did not meet our vision of a walkable pedestrian friendly downtown.  (For reference, our existing sidewalks average 10-feet in width.)  Another scenario that scored high among the focus group included 15-foot± wide sidewalks, with parallel parking and full-width park assist lanes on both sides of the street.  We presented this scenario to the MRA and the City Council and it was unanimously agreed that the scenario with wider sidewalks and a park assist lane is a better fit with our vision. 

On March 30, 2018, Stantec Consulting Services Inc. acquired Occam Engineers, Inc.

On April 3, 2018 the design engineer, Stantec, submitted their proposed 30% design for the entire corridor along with their proposed street furnishings, plant material, and finishes.  Enlarged color renderings of the roundabouts and typical block sections were part of the submittal package.  Later in that same month the MRA Commissioners and the City Councilors reviewed and approved the design concept.  

On July 5th, 2019 construction ready drawings were finalized and submitted to the City of Farmington.  Now it’s time to prepare for the bidding phase.


On October 20, 2019 the City of Farmington published the bid for the Downtown Farmington Revitalization – Complete Street project.  Bid opening is scheduled for November 19th, 2019.  The City intends to issue a Notice to Proceed for January 6, 2020. 

The City of Farmington is pleased to announce that they have contracted with AUI, Inc. via the public bid process to provide construction services for the Downtown Farmington Revitalization – Complete Streets project along Main Street between Auburn Avenue and S. Miller Street in downtown Farmington, New Mexico. 


Notice to proceed for construction was given for January 6, 2020.
